Prevent Drowning at Home

While it is worthwhile to teach your child to swim as soon as he is able, all young children still need adult supervision in or near water. If you have a pool at home, you must observe the following:

  • When your pool is not being used, keep it clear of toys, balls, flotation aids, and anything else that might attract children.
  • When several children are using the pool, a responsible adult or older child should be given the job of watching each child.
  • Don’t rely on personal flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. Some of them, particularly if they don’t fit well, can be dangerous.
  • Keep a resuscitation guide near your pool.
  • Learn first aid and resuscitation skills so you will know what to do if an emergency occurs.
